Sagrantino is a grippy, gutsy red wine that ages gracefully. Spicy earth and leather aromas combine with ripe plums, blackberries and subtle chocolate. The palate has strong textural tannins balanced by light acidity and red fruit flavours.
The fruit comes from an easterly facing vineyard in the Myrrhee valley where the canopy is managed to maximise fruit flavour and colour. The fruit was harvested by hand and fermented in open top fermenters. The grapes were inoculated with BM45, which helps to produce soft round wines. Fermentation lasted 10 days before the grapes were basket pressed and drained to barrels where the wine remained for 18 months prior to bottling. This variety is quite tannic so is suited for long aging from 10 to 18 years.
