Frosts, Drought, Bushfires
The last month has been a very interesting time in our vineyards, between frosts (three devastating ones in total), drought (we are now only allowed to use less than half of our yearly water allocation) and now bushfires.
On Saturday 2nd December bushfires came very close to our vineyards on the hills opposite our cellar door site. They came so close in fact that spot fires actually managed to burn a little over a quarter of an acre of our Pinot Grigio vines. If it were not for the quick arrival of the CFA we would have lost a lot more than that.
Saturday night saw the whole ridge behind our cellar door go up in flames, it was a very scary twelve hour period for us all. Thank God for the efforts of the CFA volunteers as well as our family and friends who arrived with their fire fighting equipment just in the nick of time to help us out – we really can’t thank these people enough.
That said, 2007 will be an interesting vintage!
